`Half the schools in Musoma lack toilets`
More than half of primary and secondary schools in Musoma District, Mara Region have no toilets, the situation which is said to contribute to persistent cholera outbreaks.
Musoma District Planning Officer Yaled Mgula revealed this when presenting budget proposals for the year 2010/11 in the district’s full council meeting held on Friday.
He said sometimes the students and teachers were forced to cut short sessions so that they can go back home or in the surrounding bushes to respond to short and long calls.
Mgula said plans were underway to close the schools to avoid cholera outbreaks during the rainy season.
Meanwhile, Mgula said that apart from toilets, the schools also face an acute shortage of teachers’ houses. However, he said the government was working hard to address the problem.
In another development, Musoma Rural District Council is planning to purchase a speed boat to be used by fisheries officers to intensify patrols on Lake Victoria in a bid to curb crime.
The District Executive Director Dr Karaine ole Kunei made the plan public during his briefing to full council meeting that met on Friday.
He said the process to announce tenders was already underway.
