Dar es Salaam, 10th May, 2012:
At
an event held in the Tanzanian capital of Dar es Salaam today, Nokia
announced the launch of a developer training programme in partnership
with the Dar Teknohama1 Business Incubator (DTBi) and the Tanzania
Commission of Science and Technology (COSTECH). The programme, which
kicked off for an initial six week period, is aimed at equipping a new
set of developers with the skills to create applications using Java, and
will also open up access to a wide array of tools to enable developers
to push the boundaries of what is possible with Java based
applications.
The
program runs from the 10thApril to 21stMay 2012 and will involve 30
students selected from more than 100 applicants in Tanzania. The
selected students will be taken through a fully-funded programme that
will include hands-on code laboratories dedicated to cutting-edge web
and mobile technologies.
Speaking
atthe launch of the programme, Nokia’s Vice-President of Corporate
Relations and Business Environment for the region, Jussi Hinkkanen,
noted that the partnership with COSTECH and the DTBi is a major boost
for Nokia’s efforts in the country: “Nokia’s intention is to equip
developers with technical knowledge regarding advanced Java development
techniques, which will help them create applications for both Nokia
phones, as well as a wide variety of others. This initial training also
sets the stage for further collaboration with Nokia and local
developers in Tanzania, with the aim of having mobile applications that
play a role in the economy of the country and elsewhere.”
COSTECH (www.costech.or.tz)a
national body established in 1986, is the principal advisory organ to
the government on all matters pertaining to science, technology and
innovation and their application for socio-economic development in the
country, helping to realize the nation’s development Vision 2025. The
DTBi (www.teknohama.or.tz)
is an autonomous and private sector driven entity assisting early
stage ICT companies in four ways:By lowering and increasing the chances
ofsurvival with shared resources, by facilitating access to finance
and markets, with credible support through targeted mentoring and
coaching, and through networking for technical trends and
opportunities.
While
officiating the launch, the Deputy Minister for Communication, Science
& Technology of Tanzania, Hon. January Makamba stated that the
Government of Tanzania was putting in place an enabling environment for
ICT growth, “We at the Ministry will do our part to set the proper
enabling environment for the growth and enhancement of ICT innovation in
the country. Our goal is to develop critical ICT human resources
almost at all levels, and bridging the digital divide gap.”
“Java
apps run on top of a number of mobile platforms, including our Series
40 platform, and offer the largest opportunity for any mobile platform
representing a huge opportunity for profitability in the mobile
industry. I am particularly excited by the kinds of local apps and
services that are going to serve people here in Tanzania,” concluded
Hinkkanen.
Recently,
Nokia has made significant steps in involving the Series 40 user
interface, adding touch and full QWERTY keyboards to the portfolio and
adding a number of key features across the range like Wi-Fi and location
awareness which enable smartphone-like experiences at an affordable
price.
